BRAHMS Ein deutsches Requiem
guest concert

Description

Johannes Brahms’ (1833–1897) *A German Requiem* is one of the most significant and emotionally powerful works in the history of music. The seven-part version for soloists, choir, and orchestra was first performed on February 18, 1869, in Leipzig. Although Brahms based his composition on the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead, the text—compiled from the Bible in German—is more relatable to people. Brahms viewed the grief over those we lose as a heavy burden. By capturing and shaping this pain in his music, he created a space for the bereaved. His work is an attempt to endure the inevitable with quiet, composed acceptance and to offer comfort to the living. Under the direction of Wolfgang Mettler, the Konstanz Symphonic Choir will be accompanied by the renowned Lake Constance Philharmonic. Two outstanding voices have been secured for the demanding solo parts: Soprano Julia Sophie Wagner already shone in 2025 at the Konstanz Council during the world premiere of Enjott Schneider’s “Die Glocke.”

Versatility has been a constant throughout her career.  On the opera stage, she most recently appeared as Pamina in Mozart’s *The Magic Flute* at the Leipzig Opera, having previously performed there as, among other roles, a Flower Maiden in Richard Wagner’s *Parsifal* and as Friederike in the world premiere of Gerd Kühr’s *Paradiese*. The great choral works of the Classical and Romantic periods are also an integral part of her repertoire. Baritone Maximilian Krummen has been well known to audiences on Lake Constance at least since his acclaimed role in “Freischütz” on the Bregenz Lake Stage in 2025. Guest engagements have taken him to venues including the Munich State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Bonn Opera; he has appeared as Conte Almaviva in *Le Nozze di Figaro* at the Volkstheater Rostock; and as Guglielmo in *Così fan tutte* at the Bregenz Festival.
