Description

In the second concert, you can look forward to a program that could also be described as “Composing Under Time Pressure.” The overture to *Idomeneo* was composed in such a short time that the musicians were overwhelmed because they could barely rehearse—Mozart, exasperated, berated them as “quarter-note hackers.” He wrote the elegant concerto for flute and harp for a Parisian duke, who ultimately never paid him for it—even though Mozart didn’t particularly like the flute. Finally, he composed the Haffner Symphony so quickly “on the fly” that he rediscovered it by chance months later and was surprised by its quality.
