4th Philharmonic Concert

Description

Arthur Honegger’s *Rugby* brings the sport right into the concert hall: “I love soccer, but the wilder, less regulated rhythm of rugby inspires me more.” He wasn’t interested in program music, but rather in the interplay of rhythm and timbre. The tempo remains fast when the young pianist Yoav Levanon performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1—a work that was initially panned as “worthless and unplayable.” Charles Ives’s Symphony No. 2 receives its Konstanz premiere: a bold blend of American folk songs and European tradition.
