Maurice Maeterlinck's drama “Pelléas et Mélisande” inspired Gabriel Fauré to write incidental music, which he later transformed into a sad and beautiful suite. More than three decades later, his compatriot Francis Poulenc drew on a German model when he developed his concerto for organ, strings and timpani from the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach.
